Hyperhydrosis is a condition in which there is an excessive production of sweat. This problem is most pronounced in the underarms, palms of the hand or soles of the foot. While the exact cause is unknown, this is commonly a genetic condition. Estimates say up to 1.3 million people in the U.S. have this condition. Unfortunately many persons hesitate to discuss this condition with their physicians even though it can greatly affect their daily lives.
There are 3 common treatments.
1. Use of a strong prescription antiperspirant.
2. Botox injections.
3. Surgery (invasive).
Botox injections have been approved by the FDA for this application since 2004. This is the least invasive and most effective approach, especially in the underarm area. Treatment is effective up to 200 days post-treatment.
